We all have those times. Being bored with your regular old routine, feeling stagnant, stuck in the same day-to-day rut.
It’s easy to get tired of doing the same thing over and over after a while, even the things you enjoy. I personally find myself slipping into that mindset around January-February, after the excitement of the holidays dissipates, but it can happen to anyone at any time of year. Luckily, there are plenty of simple, easy fixes to help bring some variety and newness back into your daily life.
Want to refresh your routine and reconnect with excitement and enjoyment? Here’s a list of my favorite ways to shake things up:
1. Discover some new music
If you listen to music at work or while commuting, it can get pretty drab after hearing the same five songs on the radio over and over again every day. Or if you’re like me, maybe you have a music streaming service and just shuffle the same playlist over and over.
Even music you enjoy can get dull after a while, so take the time to look up some new artists and give them a listen. I love Spotify’s ‘Discover Weekly’ playlists for popular new music, and the ‘Daily Mix’ feature which generates a playlist of saved and new songs for you based on your previous listening history.
Or, ask your friends if they have any recommendations for you; this comes with the added bonus of bonding over shared music taste!
Finding new songs to listen to is a simple but seriously effective way to refresh your daily routine. I try to make it a habit, that way I always have something new to listen to and I’m not getting bored with the same songs all day long.
2. Get some fresh air
This one’s pretty standard- I know, fresh air and sunshine, right? But spending time outside, especially in nature, is good for both our minds and our bodies.
Countless research has been done on the benefits of spending time in a ‘restorative space’ (aka, nature). Venturing out into the great outdoors for even just thirty minutes a day is proven to help improve short-term memory and concentration, relieve stress, restore mental energy, and sharpen your thinking and creativity.
I’m fortunate enough to have 10 acres of nature for a backyard (though I’m not so fond of it when mowing season rolls around). I love to take walks in the fields and around the ponds, and sit outside on the porch; it’s an easy way to refresh my mood and help me feel grounded.
If you don’t have immediate access to natural surroundings, check out a local park, community garden, or nature preserve.
You don’t have to be super outdoorsy, either- even just sitting outside on your porch, balcony, patio, etc. is enough to help freshen up your surroundings. And if the weather’s bad? Well, as my mom likes to say, there’s no bad weather- only bad clothes.
3. Watch the show/read the book that everyone’s been recommending
You know that thing that everyone and their dog has been begging you to check out, but you’ve been putting off for whatever reason? Now is a great time to dive in- a new interest to immerse yourself in gives you something to look forward to. Plus you can finally answer “yes” to all the people asking you “have you seen/read _____ yet?!” which, depending on how persistent your friends are, can sometimes be good enough motivation in itself.
4. Treat yo’ self
Mix up your regular skincare/beauty routine with a new face mask, body scrub, or shower gel that you wouldn’t usually use. Splurge on something luxurious, or go for something affordable, I love these face masks for gentle, glow-boosting hydration.

5. Order something new at your usual lunch spot
This one’s a bit out of the box, but one of my favorite ways to shake things up is as easy as trying something different next time you go to your favorite restaurant. I’m the kind of person who orders the exact same thing every time, so stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new can be difficult, but it’s always worth it!
This applies to drinks as well as food: for those who can’t go without their morning caffeine fix, challenge yourself to try a different flavor of coffee, or a different drink entirely if you’re really looking for a change!
6. Rearrange your furniture
Now, I’m not saying you have to completely turn your house upside-down; that’s a big undertaking and definitely not quick enough of a fix for this blog post. But if you’re bored of your decor, try switching a few small pieces around. You’d be surprised at what a difference it can make, especially if you’re working with a smaller space. Or you can liven up your space with some DIY artwork and decor, if you’re the crafty type.
